Training Requirements for Support Specialists and Network Systems Administrators

The increasing demand for computer support specialists means that many companies have become more flexible about the educational requirements for entry level positions. However, in order to take advantage of the advancement and promotion potential these positions involve, formal training or a college degree is recommended.

For help desk and computer support positions, many employers prefer employees with some college experience in a computer related field, or individuals who have achieved computer industry certification in the skills they will be using on the job. In some cases, practical experience working with computers may be all that is required.

A bachelor's degree in computer science or information systems is often a requirement for a network administration position. Because network administrators are responsible for managing a company's computer resources, some sort of management training, or courses in administration can be helpful.

Because customer support representatives and systems administrators frequently work with other people, good communications skills, including the ability to think and write clearly, are very important for a successful career. The ability to think logically and analyze and solve problems is important when troubleshooting hardware and software difficulties.

As hardware and software technology continues to get more sophisticated, it is important to keep up with current industry standards. Continuing education programs are offered by companies, colleges and universities, and private firms. Especially useful are the industry certification training programs offered by hardware and software vendors and independent industry groups. Passing a certification exam shows employers and professionals a specific level of knowledge in a particular subject.

Career Paths for Support Specialists and Systems Administrators

Entry level help desk and computer support specialists almost always start out interfacing with customers and clients, assisting them in learning and operating hardware and software. With experience, they may move on to more advanced roles, either as senior specialists with a particular area of expertise, in testing and development of new systems, or in training and documentation of hardware and software procedures. Some may advance as application developers. Advancement can come at a rapid pace, sometimes within months of initial employment.

Network and systems administrators typically are initially responsible for monitoring and maintaining computer systems. As they gain experience, they may take responsibility for additional systems, or may begin to supervise other employees. Because computer and network systems are an important part of a company's business operations, senior systems administrators may research new computer technologies and give advice to corporate management on their implementation.
