Education and Training Requirements for Computer Programmers and Software Engineers

Software engineers and computer programmers typically hold a bachelor degree. For some advanced positions, a master's degree may be required. In addition to degree credentials, experience with computers and relevant technology is a plus in getting hired. Typical degrees are in computer science, computer information systems, or information technology.

For computer programming positions, a knowledge of the specific language being used on the job is most important. According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, while about 47% of computer programmers hold bachelor degrees, 11 percent have only an associate degree, and 17 percent have some college, but no degree

For entry-level positions, prospective employees can increase their chances of being hired by participating in internship or externship programs while at school. A co-op position provides the graduate with useful experience, and offers an opportunity to be mentored by more experienced employees.

Industry Certification Can Boost Advancement Potential

For some positions, completing an industry certification program offered by companies including Microsoft, Oracle, and Novell may lead to increased employment opportunities. This is particularly true for systems engineering positions that require the employee to work with and use a specific vendor's software.

The Institute for Certification of Computing Professionals also offers a voluntary program to certify individuals with at least two years of experience. In order to become certified, candidates must pass examinations in general computer knowledge, computer programming languages, or computer specializations.

In addition to educational requirements, software engineers and programmers need to have good problem-solving and analytical skills. They need to be able to work well with teams, as many software development projects are operated on a team basis. Finally, good communications skills will help them as they work with customers and other employees.

Because the computer and software industry is rapidly evolving, programmers and engineers must constantly acquire new skills. By taking advantage of certification courses and professional development programs, they will be able to remain current with technology.
